Children’s eye tests
Good sight helps children learn
Children rarely complain about their sight: they think everyone sees the way they do. A check before starting school, then every year, catches problems while they’re easiest to treat.
Book a test if your child:
- sits very close to the TV or holds books near their face
- squints, rubs their eyes or tilts their head to see
- gets headaches or loses their place when reading
- has an eye that turns in or out

Questions
Frequently asked questions
How often should I have an eye test?
Most adults should have an eye exam every two years. We recommend a yearly check for children, people over 60, anyone with diabetes or high blood pressure, and anyone with a family history of glaucoma, or sooner if your optometrist advises it. Come in straight away if your sight changes suddenly.
How long does an eye exam take?
A comprehensive eye exam takes about an hour. If we use drops to widen your pupils, your eyes may be sensitive to light for a few hours, so bring sunglasses and consider not driving straight afterwards.
Can I bring my own prescription?
Yes. Bring a prescription from another clinic and we can make your glasses from it. If it is more than two years old, or your eyes feel different, we’ll suggest a quick re-check so your new lenses are right.
What if I have an eye emergency?
Call us straight away if you have sudden loss of vision, flashes and new floaters, a painful red eye or an eye injury. For chemical splashes, rinse the eye with clean water for at least 15 minutes, then seek urgent care.
